The celebration of Earth Day began on April 22, 1970. It sprang out of the UNESCO conference of 1969, at the behest of peace activist John McConnell. The first Earth Day poster was made by the artist Robert Rauschenberg. His work commemorated what the day is about: educating people about the systematic destruction of the planet. The same year Earth Day was launched, President Richard Nixon also launched the Environmental Protection Agency. Forty-seven years after the original Earth Day, the urgency to stand up for the earth is quite imperative again.  The recent rolling back of regulations regarding corporation waste disposal and more has made joining this Earth Day even more relevant. When lawmakers buzz about “coal is clean energy” and “climate changes is a myth,” the need to make your voice be heard is apparent.

Earth Day in DC

One of the biggest events takes place in Washington, D.C. with Earth Day Network’s March for Science. While their main demonstration will be in D.C., satellite marches are happening around the country. Their event will be quite robust thanks to their 50,000 partners in almost 200 countries. Some of their dedicated partners include Greenpeace, The Nature Conservancy, Defenders of Wildlife, and the Union of Concerned Scientists. Their April 22 event on the National Mall features a rally and teach-in. There will be lectures from scientists and community leaders. Fresno feels the green

Meanwhile, smaller communities around the country are also celebrating Earth Day in their own way. One city in California has a dedicated website, Earth Day Fresno, which includes the line up for 2017. On April 22, Fresno’s Radio Park will be filled with green vendors, food, a bike show, live entertainment and all kinds of kids activities. The main stage starts rocking at 10:00 am with an indigenous Mexican dance group and then various dancing, singing, and sambaing performances ends around 5:00 pm. With an underlying theme of reduce, reuse and recycle, their fun children’s activities include: turning a t-shirt into a reusable bag, making a checkerboard out of a pizza box and playing carnival games made from upcycled materials.

Earth Day Texas

Touted as the largest Earth Day celebration in the country, Dallas is holding their three-day Earth Day Texas event at Fair Park. Starting on April 21, this hoedown mixes environmental organizations, businesses, academic institutions, governmental agencies with live music, sustainable beer and delicious food. There will also be movie screenings, lectures, and interactive programming. Everything is bigger in Texas, including this super-sized multi-media Earth Day extravaganza. Fittingly, the creator of the inaugural Earth Day poster is also from Texas. Make this an Earth Day to remember with a nearby same day hotel in Dallas.

Fort Collins celebrations

On Saturday, April 22, the Civic Center Park in Fort Collins will celebrate Earth Day by giving back. In addition to musical acts and interactive presentations, it’s also a food drive and electronic waste recycling center. Non-perishable items will be collected for the food bank. From 11:00 am until 5:00 pm, the park will be alive with performances and lots of activities. From electric vehicle rides to climate action bingo, the event emphasizes education in a fun way. Musical guests include Whippoorwill, the FoCoMX Band, and the Waido Experience. The event begins with an open drum circle–so budding percussionists are welcomed. There will also be speakers, a beer garden, local dishes and workshops throughout the day.
